Great Wolf Lodge

Last February (2009), we reluctantly booked 3 nights at the Great Wold Lodge in Grapevine Texas — an indoor waterpark.

Relectantly was a mistake in our thinking … we had a BLAST! All of us! If you like water (or not .. but have family members who do) there is enough to keep even “those who choose NOT to wear a swimsuit and get wet” to stay busy!

We had such fun we took the Great Wolf up on their offer to ADD Sunday Night to our stay at a tremendous discount (so ended up staying 4 nights)!

There are standard rooms, a variety of suites .. which we took advantage of with 6 in our room!

For this reason, I do suggest you NOT go on a weekend, unless that’s your ONLY option and if that’s the case .. you and I need to talk! Taking a vacation when I want and not when my bos gives me time away is one of the top reasons I was attracted to what I do.

Freedom = Choices!

Back to the Great Wolf … the food is good, especially in comparison to so many ‘kid friendly resorts’. There are a multitude of ‘other’ things to do — for both adults and the kids! And the Indoor WaterPark is well designed and has waetr activities for all. And we all enjoyed the shopping, too!

Great Wolf Lodge

It was actually SNOWING — yes, it snows in Texas every now and then .. so we were warming up by the fire before heading out to our cars for the icy, cold drive back home!

Cozy by the Fire!

Cozy by the Fire!

Fun? I’d say YES! We already have two more short stay ‘getaways’ planned and it won’t even have been a year since our first when we return from them both — so, I’d say we’re hooked! The Great Wolf will for sure be a spot we return again and again .. and it’s a 6 hour drive but well worth it!

Being a cruise travel agent for several years, then planning many vacations for my family and then more planning for a few close friends, I’ve searched more vacation websites on the ole World Wide Web (www) than I care to count. Most are so commercialized and written to make EVERY destination too dreamy to pass by .. and you get the destinct feeling they are nothing more than a pack of lies.

Well, not so with this Hawaii Planning Website I found!

I actually locted it when I typed into Google Search the following question – “When is the best time to visit Hawaii?” That ALWAYS has been my first question when reserching ANY destination. Why? We want to go when the weather is decent but are willing to give a little bit in that area for NO CROWDS.

Vacation and crowds don’t mix well!

Take a look at what I found when I ran my search; Best Time to Vacation in Hawaii

First Annual Free to Relax Team Leadership Retreat
Be a part of the team – www.WealthWithCandles.com

Fun in the Sun, Staying Cool!

Fun in the Sun, Staying Cool!

The Free To Relax Leadership Retreatas told by Kathy Schneider, Cathy Mahady, Kim Cook, Tracey Gilmore and Jordan Schneider

After our 1st Annual Free to Relax Leadership Retreat this past weekend in Texas, the five leaders who attended each wrote a few paragraphs describing the event for this month’s newsletter. After compiling the five short stories, we combined them into one long testimonial – it’s incredible, that without discussing what we should write, the five pieces of this story share a common thread and flow together so seamlessly that you would never guess it was written by five individuals.

The first thing that comes to mind in reflecting on our Leadership weekend is how incredibly blessed I am to be working with such a talented and gracious group of people.  I’ve never been in a situation where no one insisted THEY were the most important, or the most talented, or the one who most deserved to be heard.  The Free To Relax Leadership Team exemplifies the best of what you imagine when you consider the word Team.

The weekend was filled with plenty of camaraderie, learning, sharing and fun.  And the idyllic setting in rural Texas surrounded by beautiful farms, gorgeous horses, clear blue skies – and oh yeah – a pool and patio fit for royalty, couldn’t have been more perfect.  But perhaps Jordan Schneider identified the solid base this group has worked toward as we sat around the counter eating breakfast one morning.  She noted that as we sat, chatting and eating, it felt like something this group does all the time.  What’s interesting though, is that prior to this weekend, we had only had brief moments of “live” conversation recently in Las Vegas.  But because of the bond that has been cemented, it felt like we were all just neighbors getting together for that morning cup of coffee.

Jim Rohn says, “You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me?  What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay?”

He goes on to suggest, “Get around people who have something of value to share with you. Their impact will continue to have a significant effect on your life long after they have departed.”

The Leadership of the Free to Relax Team recognized the importance of doing just that. We acknowledged the value and significant effect we have, not only as business partners, but also as lifelong friends.

We brainstormed about what is and is not working for our team, we discussed the philosophy we would uphold and the future direction we will take, we shared books and resources, and we shared ourselves.

So when I ask myself that all important question that Rohn mentions – Is it okay that I am becoming who I am because of the associations I have with this group of Leaders?  I can only answer with a resounding, “YES!”

From stories about licking banana slugs to stories about Rocket, the evil horse, we laughed until we nearly cried.  We planned the future of this team and shared our goals and dreams, and what specifically would tell us when we have achieved success. The entire weekend felt like a reunion with people I’ve known my entire life.

In planning for the Leadership Retreat, some were able to bring their husband and children, others were not and I must admit there were thoughts of “will this create any conflicts?”

No Fear! The dads jumped right in like “Team”, too! They loaded up the kiddos both Saturday morning and again Sunday morning with a plan! Over the course of the two days they covered Legacy Play Village, Gatti Land, the Disney Movie; UP, Putt-Putt (with stories of holes in one!), The Science Spectrum and the local Ice Cream Shop! We laughed, not sure who wore out who first… the kids or the dads!

In the evenings, as ‘family’ we all gathered around the grill for backyard cooking and swimming! Everyone jumped in as if knowing what was needed without it being said! An assembly line was set up for washing potatoes before baking, folding towels after all the swimming pool fun, and even hauling hay to feed the horses at night!

In telling a few of my friends who aren’t in this business about our upcoming Leadership Retreat, I was met with a lot of sympathy. It dawned on me that most people really don’t enjoy the people they work with – and the thought of wasting a weekend by being forced by your boss to spend time with those people seemed horrendous.

I have to say, that concept is lost on me – because I count the people I work with, especially the fellow leaders of the Free To Relax Team, as some of my closest friends, and there was surely no “boss” forcing us to spend the weekend together!

If I could think of one quote to sum up this weekend, it would be this, by Napoleon Hill: “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible, intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind.”

He calls this the Mastermind Principle, which he defines as “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.”

Jeff Olson expands upon this mastermind principle in his book, The Slight Edge, when he says “Surround yourself with people of like mind and different talents and temperaments with the purpose of serving the goals of every member of the group. Associate with these people regularly.”

The common thread between these three quotes and the Free to Relax Team Leadership Retreat this past weekend is that we are each others’ Mastermind. The coolest part though, is that we didn’t even have to fly across the country for the weekend to figure that out; we already knew.

One of the aspects of this retreat that generated a lot of excitement was thinking about who would be the next distributors on the team to join in on the Leadership Retreat?  With so many talented distributors, only time will tell but it will surely be a great event again in 2010.

I thank each of you for sharing of yourself this weekend, for bringing out the best in me consistently and for spurring me to become all I can become. The Retreat only reinforces that I am in the right place, doing the right things, with the right people.  I am blessed that I am becoming the person I want to be because of this group of incredible leaders – and more important, friends!

What a team! What a family!

What a nice vacation destination and easy access from anywhere in New Mexico, Arizona and most areas of Texas.

When we visit Ruidoso, we always stay at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. The Inn offers gaming, dining, golfing, a variety of children’s activities, and the views are breathtaking! Take a look at just a few of the exterior photos posted on the site. In addition, horseback riding, skiing, fishing, hiking, and much more are all located near by.

Check out the shopping offered in Ruidoso!

And for dining, the list goes on and on but don’t miss Can’t Stop Smokin for the best BBQ around.

Love Horses? Gambling? Then plan to visit Ruidoso Downs while in town .. “where they promise you smiles”.

Visit Ruidoso, New Mexico (and Lincoln County) where the Sacramento mountains rise majestically above the surrounding desert plains in south central New Mexico, and Sierra Blanca peak dominates the landscape at over 12,000 feet. In the midst of these sacred mountains there is a magical valley where tall pines whisper in the breeze, and a rushing stream makes lively music.

Put Ruidoso on your vacation calendar soon!

Forth Worth, Texas Vacation Destination

Regardless if you have only a long weekend or a full week to get away, Fort Worth has a lot to offer for a family vacation get-a-way.

I grew up in Fort Worth and we took advantage of many of the attractions I’ve listed below on a regular basis year round. I’m thankful, my dad and mom loved to go and see things and have a good time! Many of my family memories were created from those 3 and 4 day ‘mini-vacations’ we experienced even when we NEVER left town.

If not within driving distance for a day trip and you need hotel accomodations, check out the Courtyard by Marriot located on the Trinity River and only minutes away from all (but Fossil Rimnoted below.

1. You won’t want to miss the Forth Worth Zoo — it is absoutely an AMAZING zoo and has been since my first memory in the 1960’s … and it’s been around since 1909 and OPEN DAILY 365 days a year! Allow no less than 1/2 a day to see it all and plan to eat lunch while at the zoo, as well.

2. Log Cabin Village – always a good time, has always been open Tuesday – Saturday but check to be sure before making your plans … and location is almost directly across from the zoo.

3. Never been to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens and not been in awe of the beauty — even as a kid when I didn’t ‘know’ to stop and ’smell’ the roses.

4. After the Botanical Gardens, drive on over to the Japenese Water Gardens — a world of mystery and enchantment. Visit the link noted to see some photos.

5. Located in Downtown, check out the Fort Worth Water Gardens. Many Sunday evenings we went Downtown to just walk around and take in the spectacular oasis.

6. There is always a good time to be had at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. As a young child, my parents took me to the museum a couple of times a year, then somewhere along in Junior High, they would drop me and a couple of friends off to explore for the afternoon. Later in High School, I enrolled in a weekly photography class at the museum … and although I never pursued a career in photography, that class created a love for the art of photography that I still have today.

7. If time permits — and you will need a full day, take a trip on over to Glen Rose, TX (just under an hour away) and take a drive through Fossil Rim . It’s a 1700 acre Wildlife Center where you will see animals living in their natural environment. The open spaces let you interact with deer, rhinos, giraffs and many other wildlife .. all while in your own vehicle through a 9 1/2 mile tour.

Fossil Rim  From Ft. Worth and the mid cities area:

     1. From I-20 and I-35
     2. Go south on I-35W 19 miles to Alvarado
     3. At exit 26A, take Ramp (Right) onto I-35W service road
     4. Bear Right (West) onto US-67 for 40.5 miles
        a) Continue on US-67 through Glen Rose ~3.8 miles
     5. Turn LEFT (South) onto County Road 2008 1.3 miles

Branson, Misourri

Planning a vacation to Branson? Or maybe wanting to make vacaiton plans but not sure where to go?

Our family visited Branson a few years back and it’s on our list to visit again. We all had a GREAT time. It was my husband and myself, then our three children and their ages were spread out — Jordan was 16, Clayton was 6 and Paige was 3. There really was FUN for us all! It was not the ‘retirement’ crowd I was expecting.

We stayed at one of the timeshare rentals — paid only $350 for the WEEK for a 3 bedroom condo with 3 baths and a kitchen and we are NOT a timeshare owner! Just run a serach for timeshare rentals in Branson and you’ll find many properties to choose from. Here is just one example – Branson Timeshare Rentals

We visited all of the following and loved them all -

Dixie Stampede
McFarlain’s for GREAT FOOD
Shepard of the Hills
Silver Dollar City

In addition, we stopped by for pie and ice cream at a local parlor one evening following dinner, then took the most amazing horse and carriage ride along the river another evening — and the river was all lit up for the Christmas Holiday season.

We also took one afternoon and drove around the Table Rock Lake .. only one of many lakes in the area.

Book Branson, a great vacation for the entire family!

Destination for a San Antonio, Texas Vacation

Our family is not one to ‘flock’ to destinations with the ‘crowds’. We research and look for the least likely traveled days when planning our vacations so we take VERY FEW vacations in the Summer – but opted to have a backyard pool for those lazy days of Summer; June, July and August.

Come Fall, though we begin to get the ‘yearning’ to getaway.

Our children attend a Private School that has the full week off at Thanksgiving so traditionally we’ve used that week for vacationing; going to the tourist spots the few days prior to Thanksgiving, then planning for Thursday – Saturday to be somewhere that doesn’t involve lines, etc.

This Thanksgiving Week, we’ve planned a vacation, Saturday – Wednesday (prior to Thanksgiving) to visit the San Antonio, Texas River Walk http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/

Take a look at their photo gallery – http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/photos/default.aspx

In the past, we stayed at a hotel directly on the River Walk – enjoyed it so much, we’ve booked a hotel on the Walk again this year. Breakfast overlooking the river, then most everything one would want to see or do (and more) is all within walking distance. Last time, our car never left the parking garage except the day we spent at San Antonio’s Sea World …. which we’ll take a day to attend again this year.

We discovered that the Monday prior to Thanksgiving – Sea World isn’t attended by many people at all. We pretty much at Shamu all to ourselves! http://www.seaworld.com/sanantonio/default.aspx

The San Antonio River Walk had a River Mall – http://www.shoprivercenter.com/main/index.php

Each evening it’s dinner at yet another great restaurant while sitting along the River and we always reserve one night to dine at the RainForest Café -  http://www.rainforestcafe.com/

And should you have an opportunity to visit, don’t miss taking a tour of the Alamo. The Alamo is not only one of Texas’ most important historical landmarks, it is also one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions, with over 2.5 million visitors annually.

And FOR SURE, take a ride up to the top of the Hemisphere. Located near downtown San Antonio, just a short walk from the River Walk, the 15-acre HemisFair Park has undergone extensive renovation and additions over the years. Today, it features, among other things, exhibits remaining from the ’68 World’s Fair, a labrinyth of cascading waterfalls, a children’s playground and, the landmark of the San Antonio skyline, the 750-foot tall Tower of the Americas.

See is all in San Antonio – http://sanantoniotourist.com/
